What exactly does the term “spiritual” mean? Different people explain it in different ways. Before understanding its meaning, it’s important to know its origin.

The sages and seers of India realized the existence of the soul ages ago, and they believed in it. One who believes in the existence of the soul is called spiritual. In other words, a person who acknowledges the subtle body within the gross physical body is spiritual.

Now, what happens when one accepts this idea? When this acceptance comes, the soul begins to draw the person inward. The individual becomes eager to reach the soul from within the physical body. They start turning away from the external world and incline toward the inner world. This is called “opening the door,” and as a result, the soul awakens. Humans are said to have five bodies and five vital energies. When a person moves between the gross and subtle bodies, other disembodied and non-physical entities may appear to them.

These may be spirits of different kinds—some good, some sinful, some harmful. At that stage, the person either prefers to remain alone or is compelled into solitude. They may develop connections with entities such as ghosts, spirits, deities, yakshas, yakshinis, fairies, serpents, and other divine forces. Gradually, they feel more comfortable with these entities than with ordinary people. During this period, they are guided onto the path of spiritual practice and gain profound knowledge. This process is referred to as spirituality.
