According to Hindu mythology, Rahu causes eclipses by swallowing the Sun or the Moon. As per legend, Swarbhanu, the son of the demon king Viprachitti and queen Simhika, disguised himself as a god and sat between the Sun and Moon to drink the divine nectar (Amrit). When Mohini (Lord Vishnu’s female avatar), who was distributing the elixir of immortality, noticed the deception, she struck Swarbhanu with her discus, severing his head from his body. However, since he had already consumed the nectar, he did not die. Swarbhanu begged Vishnu for liberation, and thus, his head was attached to a serpent’s body, becoming Rahu, while his serpent-headed body became Ketu.

Though Rahu is not a planet, it is considered one of the Navagrahas (nine celestial influences). Rahu is regarded as malefic, and its influence in Vedic astrology is often compared to that of Saturn (Shani). The metal representing Rahu is lead, its element is air, and its direction is southwest. In Indian numerology, Rahu governs the number 4 and rules over three Nakshatras (lunar mansions): Ardra, Swati, and Shatabhisha. The Rahu Dasha (planetary period) lasts 18 years, with the 6th and 8th years being the most troublesome.
